Can Seniors over 80 get Burial Insurance?

As I mentioned earlier, many people that I talk with daily are under the impression that they can be denied coverage based solely on their age.

While that does hold some truth, it is not the whole truth. For people ages 80-89, there is definitely hope.

In fact, some of the best carriers in the country will cover my clients in this age bracket! What a relief right? Not only can you get covered, but you can get covered by the absolute best in the business.

What is Burial Insurance?

You may be just wondering what exactly Burial insurance is. In that case, let me explain! Burial insurance is a form of life insurance that is designed for covering the end of life costs such as a funeral, cremation, and everything that comes with those things. It is typically a whole life policy, which means it is there when you need it, not if you need it. What I mean by that is the main competitor of burial insurance or final expense as it is commonly known, is term life insurance. Term life is a type of life insurance policy that is in effect for a certain period of time. Mostly 15-20 years but some are 5 or 10 year terms as well, or 30 for younger folks. For seniors over 80, or any senior in general, term insurance is not the best option in my professional opinion. The reason is that when the term is over, your money that you have paid on the policy is gone along with the policy, so if you pass away, your family will receive nothing. With burial insurance or final expense insurance, you are covered for life. The rate will never go up, and the coverage will never go down. You know for sure your family is taken care of. A good rule of thumb to remember the difference is Term life insurance is there for if, whole life is there for when.

What Companies will Accept Seniors over 80?

There are actually a few options for seniors age 80-85. From 85-89 it slims down, but still options! I will provide a pricing table below this section, but the carriers are the best for those over 80.

Aetna/CVS

Aetna Accendo or CVS has a tremendous history, and track record of paying their clients.

While they are best known for their medical coverage, or drug coverages, the Life insurance section of CVS is incredible. For seniors over 80, there is nobody else on the market that can beat them in price!

Along with providing excellent and exceptional coverage, they have the best application process as well! In fact, it is my favorite one of the top carriers that I am proud to represent.

After the health questions are answered, it is a simple security question signature. By far the most streamlined signature process on the market, and if you can shop online with Amazon, you can buy burial insurance through me with Aetna or CVS. It is that simple!

Mutual of Omaha

Mutual of Omaha will cover clients age 80-85. They don’t go up to 89, but are very good for the 80-85 group. Mutual of Omaha’s name speaks for itself and I have a review of them here.

You can’t go wrong with a company that has been around as long as Mutual. In the insurance business, companies do not last as long as they have without being superior.

They also have incredible rates, which I go over in the review I linked above. They are one of my top carriers that my clients love to be insured through, and I love being able to represent them!
They are a great company with tremendous track record, and one that many people recognize and trust. If this is you and you don’t mind potentially paying a couple of dollars more, mutual may be your best bet! You certainly won’t regret it.

Great Western

Especially for my clients that have a few serious health issues, great western is tremendous. GWIC cover ages 80-85 and give a great amount of coverage and service.

Great Western is also great for clients that are in this age range that won’t qualify for Mutual of Omaha or Aetna/CVS for one reason or the other. They are a fantastic option, while staying economically competitive.

They are not my go to carrier for this situation, as I prefer to give my clients the best priced policy that they qualify for, but they are still in the conversation!
